 Disciplinary Text Set

Drawing: These texts will show how art can act as an interdisciplinary field across multiple subject areas, as well as explore ideas within the medium.

Text 1: A Brief History of Drawing Drawing Timeline

1. “A Brief History of Drawing.” The Art of Education.

2.  This text introduces different ways in which drawing has been used across multiple different fields. This text mentions the implementation of geometric perspective, and other more technical elements of drawing, as well as some of the ways that drawing can be used in science, historical record, politics, etc.

3. StoryToolz: Quantitative 14.7 average grade level, so this would be used as a supporting text for contextual information. Qualitative: the text is complex in terms of purpose and knowledge demands.

4. This reading would be complex, because it mentions drawing being used in many different ways, and explores diversity in the medium.

5. I would have students do a talking to the text exercise, focusing on a piece of information they are curious about. Then this can lead in to an investigation of drawing in a more specific context, unique to each student's interest.

Text 2: Thinking About Texture (introduction to texture) (VCAE)

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/13/learning/lesson-plans/analyzing-the-elements-of-art-seven-ways-to-think-about-texture.html

1. Farr, Kristin. “Analyzing the Elements of Art | Seven Ways to Think About Texture.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 13 Oct. 2016, www.nytimes.com/2016/10/13/learning/lesson-plans/analyzing-the-elements-of-art-seven-ways-to-think-about-texture.html.

2. This is an examination of how texture can influence an art piece in terms of visual cues. In this article the focus is on texture and how it relates to our visual culture. What do the textures evoke in use for us to recognize them and make connections to things we know. (exploring schema)

3. StoryToolz: Quantitative 9.4 average grade level (I would probably use this as a grade 9 or 10 text). Qualitative: text complexity is moderately complex; the knowledge demand might be challenging, but the article provides links that can inform about some artists and their work for context.

4. This reading is diverse in term of media being explored, and ways in which we can engage with texture to make connections to our own visual culture.

5. Question: I would use this text to begin talking about elements of design that would develop texture making. A discussion about these art pieces and what students understand or wonder about them wonder begin the process of engaging with visual cultures and exploring textures (implied or real).

Text 3: Art21: Richard Tuttle Interview (artist perspective)

1. Tuttle, Richard. “Drawing & Exhibitions.” Art21, Art21 Non-Profit Organization, Nov. 2011, art21.org/read/richard-tuttle-drawing-and-exhibitions/.

2. This is a transcript of an interview done by artist Richard Tuttle, a contemporary sculptor/artist, done with the Art21 organization. This interview explains about Tuttle's process and his influences and how he uses and interprets "drawing."

3. StoryToolz: Quantitative: 7.7 average (I would probably use this in a grade classroom or above). Qualitative: This text is probably moderately complex in terms of purpose and knowledge demand about the artist and his work. Overall, this text is probably more appropriate for a high school level classroom (grade 11 or 12).

4. This text is moderately complex, it shows diversity in ideas within the art community about the definition of drawing and the medium.

5. Question: Do you think that the definition of drawing can be this broad? This question would begin a Think Aloud exercise or a Think Pair Share, where students could explore ideas about the medium and how it can be used by artists in other medias.
